On September 20, 2022, in New York, on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Mr Muratbek Azymbakiev, Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Administration of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, met with Mr Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The parties discussed the situation that has developed as a result of an act of armed aggression by Tajikistan against Kyrgyzstan.

The Kyrgyz side brought to the attention of the High Representative Borrell a reliable chronology of the events of September 14-17, 2022. Mr Azymbakiev reported about 59 victims, more than 160 injured, more than 140 thousand internally displaced persons, destruction of numerous social and civil infrastructure facilities, including schools and residential buildings, facts of seizure and looting of state property and property of Kyrgyz citizens.

He emphasized the commitment of the Kyrgyz side to de-escalation and an unchanged position on resolving the situation exclusively through political and diplomatic means, and also drew the attention of the High Representative to the fact that the Kyrgyz side acted solely for the purpose of self-defense and protection of the sovereign territory of the Kyrgyz Republic from another unprovoked invasion of the Tajik armed forces.

In turn, the High Representative expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. Mr Borrell noted that he was following the development of the situation with great concern, called for its de-escalation, and also noted the importance of resolving it as soon as possible only through a constructive peaceful dialogue between the parties.
