On February 13, 2020 the Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic Dinara Kemelova held a meeting with Kwon Goohoon, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee in the Northern Economic Cooperation of the Republic of Republic of Korea. During the meeting, Dinara Kemelova noted that Kyrgyzstan considers South Korea as one of the priority partners in the Asian region. She also emphasized that in the light of the initiative “New Northern Policy” announced by Korea, the Kyrgyz Republic is very interested in expanding trade and economic cooperation with Republic of Korea, in promoting projects on the green economy, digitalization, transport, energy, infrastructure, textile industry, agriculture, tourism and etc.
Kwon Goohoon praised the development of democracy in Kyrgyzstan and the contribution of the Republic of Korea to this process. Mr.Kwon informed that, by the decision of the President of the Republic of Korea, 2020 has been declared as a Year of Northern Economic Cooperation. In this regard, the Republic of Korea side has planned a series of events aimed at strengthening South Korea’s cooperation with Russia, Mongolia, Central Asia and etc.
The sides also expressed confidence that as a result of the planned activities it will be possible to create a certain foundation for cooperation of a new level and to intensify interaction in the implementation of mutually beneficial projects in such areas as the digital economy, infrastructure, transport and logistics, energy and tourism.
For reference: In 2017, at the initiative of President Moon Jae in Republic of Korea announced a “New Northern Policy” aimed at expanding the economic space by establishing ties with a number of states in the North. The New Northern Policy Initiative has a political and economic direction, the purpose of which is to strengthen Republic of Korea’s interaction with Russia, Mongolia and the countries of Central Asia. In 2017, a special Committee for Northern Economic Cooperation was created, the purpose of which is to create new growth engines by strengthening ties in various areas, such as transport, logistics, energy, etc.
