Kyrgyz-Hungarian relations

Hungary recognized the independence of the Kyrgyz Republic on December 26, 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on April 16, 1992.

In February 2020, the opening of the Embassy of Hungary in the Kyrgyz Republic took place in Bishkek. S. Dorogi, Ambassador of Hungary to the Kyrgyz Republic presented his credentials to S. Zhaparov, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic.

In October 2021, the opening of the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic to Hungary took place in Budapest. March 23, 2022, T. Kushchubekov, Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic to Hungary presented his credentials to J. Áder, President of Hungary.

Political cooperation

Cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and Hungary is characterized by a progressive high level dynamic. Especially during the years of 2015-present, the relations between the Kyrgyz Republic and Hungary has been fast-moving and efficient, specifically in the areas of trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation. At the same time, there is an unrealized potential for its further expansion. In this regard, both countries show significant interest in cooperation in bilateral and multilateral formats.

During the years of cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and Hungary, 5 high-level visits took place: 1 official visit of the President of Hungary A. Göncz to the Kyrgyz Republic (1997), 3 official visits of the Presidents of the Kyrgyz Republic to Hungary (1998, 2011, 2020), official visit of the Prime Minister of Hungary V. Orbán to the Kyrgyz Republic in 2018.

As noted above, in the period from September 2 to 4, 2018, the first official visit of the Prime Minister of Hungary V. Orbán to the Kyrgyz Republic took place for the first time in the history of the two states as part of his participation in the opening ceremony of the third WNG and the OTS summit in Cholpon-Ata city.

On September 28-29, 2020, the official visit of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic to Hungary took place. During this visit, a Joint Declaration on strategic partnership was signed between the Kyrgyz Republic and Hungary. For the first time, Kyrgyzstan has established relations of a strategic level with a Member-state of the European Union. Thus, during the visit of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic to Hungary, a memorandum was signed on the establishment of the Kyrgyz-Hungarian Development Fund in Kyrgyzstan. One of the important achievements made within the framework of cooperation in cultural and humanitarian sphere in recent years has been signing an agreement with the Hungarian side to increase the quota of allowance for Kyrgyz students to study at Hungarian universities from 75 to 200 places.

Additionally, inter-parliamentary ties have been developing dynamically. Friendship groups have been set up in the parliaments of the two countries.

On September 1, 2011, the Deputy of the National Assembly of Hungary, Chairman of the Parliamentary Group for Cooperation and Friendship with the Countries of Central Asia F. Papcsák visited the Kyrgyz Republic. The two sides regularly exchange high levels visits.

A dialogue is maintained at the level of Ministries of foreign affairs. In total, since 1993, 14 mutual visits and meetings have been carried out at the level of the leadership of foreign ministries, of which 5 are mutual official visits (1996, 2008, 2016, 2019 and 2020).
