Trade and Economic Cooperation

Trade and economic cooperation is among priority areas of bilateral relations between Kyrgyzstan and Switzerland. According to the National Statistics Committee of the Kyrgyz Republic, the trade turnover between the two countries was: in 2016 - 659.7 million dollars, in 2017 - 507.5 million dollars, during 9 months of 2018 - 13.1 million dollars. Kyrgyzstan mainly exports precious metals to Switzerland, and imports pharmaceutical products, some types of equipment and machinery, watches and electronics. According to the National Statistical Committee of the Kyrgyz Republic, Switzerland’s direct investments in Kyrgyzstan amounted to: in 2016 - 3.6 million dollars, in 2017 - 5.5 million dollars, during 9 months of 2018 - 17.1 million dollars.

In accordance with the bilateral agreement on trade and economic cooperation of 10 May 1997, a joint commission on trade and economic cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and Switzerland was established. The first meeting of the Commission was held on April 4, 2001 in Bern. On May 29, 2008, the second meeting was held in Bishkek. The third meeting was held in Zurich on September 25, 2012. The fourth meeting was held in Bishkek on June 3, 2016. The next meeting will be held in Switzerland at the time and place agreed between the parties.

In order to strengthen trade and economic cooperation, develop business contacts between the two countries, diversify trade, promote exports and attract investments to the economy of the Kyrgyz Republic, the following visits took place at the levels of heads of state bodies of the two countries responsible for the financial and economic blocs in recent years: in 2017 - visits of the Minister of Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic to Switzerland and the Minister of Finance of Switzerland to the Kyrgyz Republic; in 2018 - visits of the Minister of Economics, Education and Research and Head of the National Bank of Switzerland to Kyrgyzstan. In addition, the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in Switzerland during 2017-2018 organized two important visits of Swiss business delegations to Kyrgyzstan in order to present to them the country's investment, export and tourism opportunities. During the visits meetings were held at the state bodies of the Kyrgyz Republic, various presentations and round tables with the participation of representatives of the business community, business associations and government bodies were arranged. A group of businessmen from among the leading Swiss companies was also a part of the delegation led by the Minister of Economy, Education and Research of Switzerland that visited the Kyrgyz Republic in summer of 2018. The development and strengthening of bilateral trade and economic relations between Kyrgyzstan and Switzerland was also discussed during the bilateral political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries on May 2, 2018 in Bern.

Trade and Economic Cooperation

According to the data of the Ministry of Economy of Kyrgyzstan, annual trade turnover between Kyrgyzstan and Italy is about 30-33 million USD among which import is more than 95%.

For the convenience of the stakeholders, the "Single Window Center" State Enterprise launched a web portal of step-by-step procedures for export/import/transit from/to/through Kyrgyzstan: https://info.trade.kg/?l=en.

Major imports from Italy: pharmaceuticals, machinery and equipment, fermented tobacco, chemicals, precious metal wares, furniture.

Major exports from Kyrgyzstan: wool, untreated hides, centrifuges.

In 2015 delegation of Kyrgyzstan headed by the Deputy Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Mr. V. Dil participated in the EXPO-2015 Universal Exhibition that was held in Milan from 1 May to 31 October 2015 under the slogan “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.
