Director of Kyrgyzpatent Rakhat Kerimbaeva and the Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to UNOG and other International Organizations at Geneva Omar Sultanov met with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Daren Tang on 17 May 2024.

Kyrgyz Party mentioned that it was one of the first countries in the world to adopt the law on traditional knowledge in 2007.

Referring to the current state of bilateral cooperation counterparts welcomed the recent visit of WIPO Assistant Director General Marco Aleman to the Kyrgyz Republic last April and his participation in the National Forum entitled “Intellectual Property and Innovation for the Development of the Country: Together Towards a Successful Future”.

Daren Tang was made aware of the plans of Kyrgyzpatent to convene in Kyrgyzstan in 2025 the International Forum dedicated to Traditional Knowledge aimed at becoming a logical follow-up of the current Diplomatic conference. Taking this opportunity Ambassador Sultanov recalled the invitation of the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic Akylbek Zhaparov and called upon Daren Tang to attend the Forum.

World Intellectual Property Organization has been proposed to establish a WIPO Department at the Kyrgyz State Technical University named after Iskhak Razzakov. WIPO welcomed this idea.

          As an outcome of the meeting parties agreed to continue negotiations on the following topics:

  • Conducting the International Forum on Traditional Knowledge in Kyrgyzstan;
  • WIPO General Director’s visit to the Kyrgyz Republic;
  • Establishing the WIPO Department in the Kyrgyz State Technical University.
