On October 21, 2020, by the initiative of the Kyrgyz side, the Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva Mr. D.Mukashev had a meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Ms. M.Bachelet in the format of the video call.

During the meeting, Permanent Representative D.Mukashev informed the High Commissioner M.Bachelet about the current internal political situation in the country and the events that had occurred after the parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan, the peaceful transfer of power in the country in strict accordance with the current legislation of the Kyrgyz Republic, which laid the foundations for the country’s further sustainable development, the strengthening of stability and the return of the situation to the legal order.

D.Mukashev assured M.Bachelet that the Kyrgyz Republic, being fully committed to its international obligations and the strict implementation of all previously signed treaties will continue to advance the democratic processes, as well as ensure the rule of law, protection and promotion of human rights and freedoms.

In turn, the High Commissioner M.Bachelet expressed her appreciation to the Kyrgyz side for providing information on the current situation in Kyrgyzstan and noted that she was following developments in the country through the OHCHR Regional Office in Bishkek. In this context, the High Commissioner expressed the hope that the new leadership of the state would firmly adhere to its international obligations to ensure and protect human rights and freedoms. In doing so, the High Commissioner highlighted the importance of ensuring the freedom of journalists and the media, the independence of the judiciary, the protection of the rights of national minorities, and the elimination of hate speech from the political discourse.

Ms.M.Bachelet stressed the readiness of the OHCHR Regional Office in Bishkek to cooperate with the new authorities in Kyrgyzstan on the promotion and protection of human rights and freedoms and expressed the hope that Kyrgyzstan would complete its political transformation shortly.

In conclusion, High Commissioner M.Bachelet wished the new leadership of Kyrgyzstan further success in its plans to build a democratic society with full protection of human rights and freedoms.
