Political cooperation

 

Cooperation in the political sphere between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Türkiye has a strategic status, which is enshrined in the form of the Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation.

Diplomatic relations between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Türkiye were established on December 24, 1991. The Republic of Türkiye was the first foreign state to recognize the independence of Kyrgyzstan.

In April 1992, the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in the Kyrgyz Republic was opened, in October 1992 - the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Republic of Türkiye.

In April 1994, the Consulate General of the Kyrgyz Republic was established in the city of Istanbul of the Republic of Türkiye, and in April 2022, the Consulate General of the Kyrgyz Republic was opened in the city of Antalya of the Republic of Türkiye.

Kyrgyz-Turkish relations are based on the common history, culture, language, and religion of the two fraternal nations. Relations between the countries are developing progressively and dynamically and are at a high level of bilateral interaction.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries, more than 100 agreements, treaties and protocols have been signed regulating issues of current and future cooperation in various fields, including political, trade, economic, cultural, humanitarian, scientific, educational, and military-technical.

The fundamental documents between the countries are the Treaty of Eternal Friendship and Cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Türkiye dated October 24, 1997, the Joint Statement of the Heads of the two states "Kyrgyzstan and Turkey: together in the XXI century" dated July 1, 1999 and the Statement on the establishment of the Supreme Council for strategic cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Türkiye dated April 26, 2011, which determined the strategic status of cooperation in the political sphere.

In April 2019, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kyrgyzstan to Türkiye K.Omuraliev presented his Credentials to the President of Türkiye R.T.Erdoğan.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, there has been an ongoing political dialogue, mutual visits and contacts at the highest and high levels have been carried out. Leaders of Kyrgyzstan and Türkiye Sadyr Zhaparov and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan maintain close interaction on a regular basis through personal meetings and telephone conversations.

In September 2018, President of Türkiye R.T.Erdoğan paid an official visit to Kyrgyzstan, during which the 4th meeting of the Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Türkiye was held. Also, President Erdoğan took part in the 6th Summit of the Heads of State of the Turkic Council and the opening of the III World Nomad Games on the shores of Issyk-Kul lake in the Kyrgyz Republic.

President of the Kyrgyz Republic S.N.Zhaparov made an official visit to the Republic of Türkiye, during which the 5th meeting of the Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation was also held.

In September 2022, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S.N.Zhaparov took part in the opening of the IV World Nomad Games on the shores of Lake Iznik in the Republic of Türkiye.

Mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Türkiye are carried out regularly. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye M.Cavusoglu paid a visit to Kyrgyzstan in March 2021, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan J.Kulubaev paid an official visit to Türkiye in August 2022.

Over the years of cooperation, 10 meetings of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Türkiye and 5 meetings of the Joint Strategic Planning Group were held.

Within the framework of multilateral cooperation, one of the most significant formats is cooperation within the framework of the Organization of Turkic States. On November 12, 2021, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S.N.Zhaparov took part in the 8th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States in Istanbul, Türkiye.
