On 1 March, 2023 the Permanent Mission of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN, together with the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs, organized a Launch event dedicated to the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness.

Distinguished speakers included the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic H.E. Mr. Zheenbek Kulubaev, President of the UN General Assembly H.E. Mr. Csaba Kőrösi, Under-Secretary-General, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, as well as over 200 representatives from the UN Member States, academia, youth and media.

The Minister H.E. Mr. Zheenbek Kulubaev during his remarks highlighted that the annual celebration of the International Day would be a positive impetus for educational work and the inclusion of disarmament and non-proliferation issues in general educational programs. In addition, he mentioned the important contributions that can be made by civil society, academia and media.

The President of the UN General Assembly and the Deputy Secretary-General of the UN expressed gratitude to Kyrgyzstan for the initiative to proclaim the International Day, and underlined that the annual celebration will make a huge contribution to the disarmament and non-proliferation policy.

On 7 December 2022, the UN General Assembly unanimously supported the initiative of Kyrgyzstan and adopted a resolution on proclaiming 5th of March as the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness.
