Political collaboration

Belgium recognized the independence of Kyrgyz Rebuplic on 20 January 1992. Diplomatic relations between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Kingdom of Belgium were established on 25 March 1992.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kyrgyz Republic to Belgium is Djumaliev Muktar Kabylbekovich.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belgium to the Kyrgyz Republic (with the residence in Astana) is Alexis De Crombrugghe De Picquendaele.

Political cooperation.

The political dialogue between Kyrgyzstan and Belgium was established in June 1994 during the visit of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic A.Akaev to Brussels, when the meetings with King Albert II, the Prime Minister and the Mayor of Brussels were held. As a result of the visit, the first bilateral Kyrgyz-Belgian document was signed - the Joint Declaration.

In recent years, there has been a gradual revival of bilateral political relations.

From 28th February to 1st March, 2011, President of the Kyrgyz Republic R.Otunbaeva paid a working visit to Belgium, during which bilateral meetings with the acting Prime Minister of Belgium Y.Leterme, and the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the Belgian Parliament A. Flaho were held.

From 16th to 20th September 2013 President of the Kyrgyz Republic A.Atambaev paid a working visit to Belgium with a visit to the EU institutions. During the visit in the bilateral format, the President had an audience with King Philippe of Belgium, meetings with the speakers of both chambers of the Belgian Parliament, which was a clear indication of the political support of Kyrgyzstan at the highest level.

Strengthening of the vector of political dialogue was facilitated by the meeting of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic A. Atambaev with King Philippe of Belgium during the visit to Belgium on March 27-31, 2015. During the visit, A.Atambaev also took part in the conference "Kyrgyzstan: Democratic Reforms and Foreign Policy Priorities " for the expert community and the diplomatic corps.

On 16 February 2017 third bilateral meeting on the highest level was held. In the run-up of the forthcoming presidential elections in the Kyrgyz Republic in November 2017, the holding of negotiations with the leader of one of the EU countries made it possible to state the adherence of the Kyrgyz Republic to democratic values. During the meeting, the parties reached an agreement on expanding and deepening the mutual sphere of trade and economic cooperation. The summit served as a symbolic start for the celebrations on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Kyrgyz-Belgian diplomatic relations.

Particular emphasis was placed on the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Kyrgyz Republic and Belgium in 2017. President of the Kyrgyz Republic A.Atambaev and King Philippe, as well as prime ministers, exchanged the congratulatory messages, the press-communiqués of Minister E.Abdyldaev and Federal Minister D.Reynders were published on official websites of the foreign ministries of Kyrgyzstan and Belgium. Ambassador A.Isaev and the Director General for bilateral relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium A.Van Calster and the Director of the responsible Department J.Indike exchanged congratulatory cards and messages as well. An article of an Ambassador A.Isaev was published on the website of the news agency AKIpress,

Inter-parliamentary relations. In November 1996 parliamentary delegation of the National Assembly of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic, headed by the Chairman, paid an official visit to Belgium.

In April 2001, the parliamentary delegation of the Belgian Senate, headed by Chairman Anne-Marie Lisen visited Kyrgyz Republic.

On 4 July 2012, a meeting was held in the National Palace of the Federal Parliament of Belgium between the deputies of the Friendship Groups of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Belgian Parliament.

On 19 April 2016, a working meeting of the deputies of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Belgian Senate was held in Brussels, which allowed to establish contacts of the delegates of the newly elected VI convocation of Jogorku Kenesh with Belgian counterparts, to discuss the whole range of relations and outline prospects.

On 25 August 2017 the Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, Defense and Security of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic A.Shadiev and the Chairman of the Committee on Budget and Finance, Chairman of the deputy group of friendship of the Jogorku Kenesh for cooperation with Belgium T.Tillaev held a meeting with the President of the French-speaking Parliament of Brussels J.De Grotte in Bishkek.

On 3-7 July 2018, during working visit of the delegation of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic, headed by the Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, Defense and Security I.Pirmatov, meetings were held with the representatives of the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament of Belgium, as well as the President of the Flemish Parliament, management of the Belgian Foreign Ministry and representatives of the European institutions in Brussels.

Contacts are developing between the foreign ministries of the parties. On 20 May 2012, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic R.Kazakbaev and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium D.Reynders held a meeting during the NATO Summit (May 20-21, 2012, Chicago).

On 18 February 2014 Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic E.Otorbaev had a meeting with the Director General for bilateral relations of the Belgian FPSFA Mr. Jan Van Dessel, during which the parties exchanged views on various issues of international and bilateral cooperation.

One of the most important and significant events in 2014 in the development of bilateral political relations between Kyrgyzstan and Belgium was the first Kyrgyz-Belgian inter-MFA political consultations in Brussels.

On 15 May 2014, the visit of the delegation of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed by the Head of the Directorate for Eastern, Southeast Europe and Central Asia G.Sluvagen took place. During the meeting, the parties discussed a wide range of bilateral and multilateral issues.

On 4 October 2016, negotiations were held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic E. Abdyldaev and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, D. Reynders. Foreign ministers agreed to hold second Kyrgyz-Belgian inter-MFA consultations on the level of deputy foreign ministers in 2017.

On 6 July 2017, the second inter-ministerial consultations took place in Bishkek at the level of Deputy Minister E.Kaikiev and the Director General for Bilateral Affairs A. Van Culster.
