Diplomatic relations between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan were established on January 14, 1993. The Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Republic of Tajikistan was opened in 1997.  Currently, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador  of the Kyrgyz Republic to the Republic of Tajikistan is Abdyldaev Erlan Bekeshovich. The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in the Kyrgyz Republic was opened in 2002. Currently, the Ambassador of Tajikistan to Kyrgyzstan is Nazirmad Alizoda.

The fundamental documents of bilateral cooperation are the Treaty on Basic Interstate Relations (1996) and the Treaty on Good Neighborly and Partnership Relations (2004).

In order to effectively address priority issues and develop bilateral cooperation, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan founded the Interstate Coordination Council, the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan, the Kyrgyz-Tajik Intergovernmental Commissions for the comprehensive consideration of bilateral issues and for the delimitation and demarcation of the state border.

Political cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is developing both on a bilateral and multilateral basis within the framework of such international and regional organizations as the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Economic Cooperation Organization .

On February 1-2, 2018, at the invitation of the President of Tajikistan E. Rahmon, the official visit of the President of Kyrgyzstan S. Zheenbekov to Tajikistan took place.  As a result of the visit, the parties signed 9 documents.

On March 19, 2018, the 16th meeting of the Kyrgyz-Tajik Intergovernmental Commission for the Comprehensive Consideration of Bilateral Issues was held in Dushanbe.  As a result of the meeting, a Protocol of 17 points was signed, which included intentions to intensify trade, economic, water, energy, transport, cultural and humanitarian relations.

On May 31 - June 1, 2018, in Dushanbe, a regular meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Independent States was held, in which the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan M. Abylgaziev took part.

On June 19-21, 2018, the High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development" was held in Dushanbe, in which the delegation of Kyrgyzstan headed by Vice Prime Minister Zh. Razakov took part.

On September 27, 2018, a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States was held in Dushanbe, in which the President of Kyrgyzstan S. Zheenbekov took part.

On October 11-12, 2018, a meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was held in Dushanbe, in which the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan M. Abylgaziev took part.

On April 5, 2019, in Moscow, on the sidelines of the CIS Ministerial Council, a bilateral meeting of the heads of the foreign affairs departments of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan was held.

On April 26, 2019, a bilateral meeting of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S. Zheenbekov with the President of the Republic of Tajikistan E. Rahmon was held in Beijing as part of the participation in the Second International Forum "One Belt - One Road", during which the heads of the two states discussed the issue of accelerating the process of delimitation  and demarcation of the Kyrgyz-Tajik border.

On May 22, 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan S. Mukhriddin made a working visit to the Kyrgyz Republic to participate in the SCO CFM and the CSTO CFM.

On June 14, 2019, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan E. Rahmon paid a working visit to Bishkek to participate in the work of the regular meeting of the SCO CHS.

On June 15, 2019, the working visit of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S. Zheenbekov to Dushanbe took place to participate in the Fifth CICA Summit.

On July 26, 2019, the Presidents of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan met on the line of the Kyrgyz-Tajik State border, during which the Heads of the two states met with local residents, elders and aksakals of the border villages of the two countries.

Further, working visits of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S. Zheenbekov to the city of Isfara and the President of the Republic of Tajikistan E. Rahmon to the city of Cholpon-Ata took place, where negotiations were held between the leaders of the two countries in narrow and expanded formats.

On November 19-20, 2020, a working visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic R. Kazakbaev to the Republic of Tajikistan took place, within the framework of which negotiations were held with S. Mukhriddin in narrow and expanded formats.  Also, Minister R. Kazakbaev met with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan K. Rasulzoda, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan D. Gulmakhmodzada, Chairman of the State Committee for National Security of the Republic of Tajikistan S. Yatimov and Minister of Culture of the Republic of Tajikistan Z. Davlatzoda.

On April 1, 2021, in Moscow, as part of participation in the regular meeting of the CIS Ministerial Council, Minister R. Kazakbaev held a meeting with Minister S. Mukhriddin.

On May 11, 2021, in Xi'an, China, on the eve of the Second Meeting of the Mechanism of the Meeting of Foreign Ministers "Central Asia - China", negotiations were held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic R. Kazakbaev and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan S. Mukhriddin.

On May 18-19, 2021, the working visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic R. Kazakbaev to Dushanbe took place to participate in the work of the CSTO Ministerial Council.

On June 28-29, 2021, at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan E. Rahmon, the official visit of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S.N. Zhaparov to the Republic of Tajikistan took place.

 On September 16-17, 2021, a working visit of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S. Zhaparov to Tajikistan took place to participate in the session of the CSTO Collective Security Council and the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO Member States.

On November 21-23, 2021, within the framework of the 17th meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs "European Union - Central Asia" in Dushanbe, a bilateral meeting was held in a narrow and wide format between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic R. Kazakbaev and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan S. Mukhriddin.

On December 8, 2021, within the framework of the "Italy - Central Asia" meeting in Tashkent, a bilateral meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic R. Kazakbaev and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan S. Mukhriddin.

On March 22, 2022, within the framework of the meeting of the OIC Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad, a bilateral meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic R. Kazakbaev and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan S. Mukhriddin in a face-to-face format.

On May 6, 2022, the Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Republic of Tajikistan E. Abdyldaev presented copies of his credentials to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan S. Mukhriddin, and held a bilateral meeting to discuss topical issues.

On May 13, 2022, within the framework of the meeting of the CIS Ministerial Council in Dushanbe, a bilateral meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Zh.M. Kulubaev and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan S. Mukhriddin.

On May 28, 2022, within the framework of the Fourth Regional Dialogue of National Security Advisors / Secretaries of Security Councils on Afghanistan Issues, a bilateral meeting between the Secretary of the Security Council of the Kyrgyz Republic M. Imankulov and the Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Tajikistan N. Mahmudzoda was held in Dushanbe.

On June 6, 2022, within the framework of the Second High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028", a bilateral meeting was held in Dushanbe between the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic D. Kemelova and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan S. Imomi.

On June 10, 2022, within the framework of the CSTO Ministerial Council meeting in Yerevan, a bilateral meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Zh. Kulubaev and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of  Tajikistan S. Mukhriddin in a face-to-face format.

On June 15, 2022 in Dushanbe, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador  of the Kyrgyz Republic to the Republic of Tajikistan Erlan Abdyldaev presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon.
