Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN Mirgul Moldoisaeva took part at the High-level meeting on the “Implementation of the water-related goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda”

On March 18 and 22 the High-level meeting on the “Implementation of the water-related goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda” took place at the UN Headquarters. The main goal of this event was the multilateral discussion on issues of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6 “Clean water and sanitation”.

Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, President of the 75th session of General Assembly Volkan Bozkyr, President of the Economic and Social Council - Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN Munir Akram took part in the High-level meeting. Also President of Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rakhmon and Prime Minister of Netherlands Marck Rutte participated in the format of pre-recorded statements. 

During this meeting the participants noted the importance of continuing cooperation between Member States and UN institutions on the issues of providing population with access to fresh water for drinking and sanitation which is the important condition for effective struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic. Also the importance of rational use of water in agriculture and energy production for sustainable economic development was mentioned.

In her statement Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic Mirgul Moldoisaeva underlined the importance of further international efforts on preservation of glaciers, as one of the key sources of fresh water in Central Asia and other regions of the world. She noted that the glaciers of the Kyrgyz Republic would totally disappear by 2100, in accordance with scientific calculations. In this regard Mirgul Moldoisaeva mentioned the Kyrgyz party’s support of projects aimed at the preservation of glaciers in upstream countries and the promotion of environment protection issues on international level in the form of relevant UN resolutions adoption. She underlined that effective and sustainable water use open new opportunities for combating COVID-19 pandemic and its economic and social consequences. In addition Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic Mirgul Moldoisaeva noted the importance of hydropower development and implementation of “green” economic models which are contributing to economic growth and sustainable development of Member States. In the final part of her statement she underlined the importance of national-level efforts to provide fresh water access for population as an important addition to international and regional initiatives. As an example she mentioned the implementation of Program of drinking water provision and drainage of habitats of the Kyrgyz Republic till 2026.
