The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Ch.Aidarbekov delivered a video statement at the High-level Plenary Meeting of the UN General Assembly to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

On October 2, 2020, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Chingiz Aidarbekovdelivered a video statement at the High-level Plenary Meeting of the UN General Assembly to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

During his speech Chingiz Aidarbekovemphasized the central role of United Nations in the field of disarmament, as well as the significance of maintaining multilateral mechanisms to achieve a nuclear-free world. In addition he expressed commitment to the policy of disarmament and nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction is a fundamental foreign policy principle of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic noted the importance of the Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia. In particular, it was emphasized that the Central Asian region is a prime example of how a nuclear weapon-free zone can contribute to the strengthening of regional and global security, while also enhancing nuclear security and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

In this regard, Chingiz Aidarbekov asked UN member states to support the updated resolution "Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia", which will be introduced by the Central Asian states during the current 75th session of the UN General Assembly.

Also the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic drew attention to the problem of the environmental consequences of uranium mining, as well as the role of education and training as tools to promote disarmament and nonproliferation of nuclear weapons.
