At the initiative of President Sadyr Zhaparov, the UN General Assembly in New York declared 2022 the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development

On the initiative of the Kyrgyz Republic and with the co-authorship of more than 93 Member States, on December 16, 2021, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2022 the "International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development", unanimously adopting a resolution of the same name.

The adopted document invites Member States, UN system organizations, other international organizations and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector and the scientific and educational circles, to celebrate the International Year appropriately in order to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable mountain development, as well as the conservation and sustainable use of mountain ecosystems.

Recall that the resolution was first announced to the world community by President Sadyr Zhaparov during a speech at the General Debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2021. The resolution was put forward on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the International Year of Mountains and the First Global Mountain Summit, which adopted the Bishkek Mountain Declaration, in 2002.
