Current 77^th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution entitled “Sustainable Mountain Development” on December 14, 2022 (New York time). On the initiative of the Kyrgyz Republic this resolution declared 2023-2027 the “Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions”. The resolution was adopted unanimously without voting procedure. 109 United Nations Member States co-sponsored it.

Initiative on declaring the “Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions” belongs to the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Zhaparov. He announced it during General Debates of the 77^th session of the United Nations General Assembly this September.

Within this year the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as diplomatic missions of the Kyrgyz Republic abroad conducted extensive campaign on promoting this initiative. To support the resolution, the Kyrgyz Republic convened High-level meeting on sustainable mountain development in the margins of the High-Level Week of the 77^th session of the United Nation General Assembly. Final statement of the Meeting was adopted as the official document of the United Nations General Assembly and calls upon United Nations Member States to support the resolution.

Declaration of the “Five Years of Action” offers great opportunities for attracting grant aid as well as investments to the economies of the mountain countries, including the Kyrgyz Republic as well as to developing “green” economy and technologies, establishing financial mechanisms for strengthening cooperation between mountain countries, developing science and education on sustainable mountain development, implementation of the projects and programs dedicated to combating negative impact of climate change, conservation of biodiversity as well as disaster risk management in mountain regions. Adoption of the resolution is the outcome of activities of the Kyrgyz Republic on advocating interests of mountain countries and confirmation of its leadership positions on these issues.
