On February 23, 2021, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Mr. Ruslan Kazakbaev took part in the High Level Segment of the ongoing 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

In his statement, Minister Mr.Kazakbaev informed the world community about the recent democratic presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan, ongoing reforms in the country in the field of human rights, as well as the prospects for further cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and the UN.

In his address, Minister of Foreign Affairs identified the following priority areas of state policy in Kyrgyzstan: constitutional reform; fight against corruption, criminals and organized crime; reform of the judicial and law enforcement systems; humanization of criminal legislation. In this context, the Minister expressed confidence that such an approach would lay a solid foundation for the formation of a new Kyrgyz society, in which the principles of the rule of law, legality and order, protection and promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of speech, will be observed and respected.

The Foreign Minister stressed that Kyrgyzstan was committed to further strengthening its image as a country that respects and protects human rights, and firmly strives to fulfill its international obligations. In this context, the Minister noted that Kyrgyzstan had begun an active work to adopt an integrated and comprehensive approach to the promotion of human rights and freedoms, including through the development and implementation of comprehensive strategies and action plans aimed at achieving the highest level of human rights protection for all categories of citizens of the country.

Reaffirming the country's commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights and freedoms, Mr. Kazakbaev reminded the world community about the nomination of Kyrgyzstan to the UN Human Rights Council for the period of 2023-2025.

For reference: The UN Human Rights Council (HRC) was established on March 15, 2006. The HRC consists of 47 states and is a forum for discussing issues and situations in the field of human rights that require its attention throughout the year. The High Level Segment of the UN HRC is attended by heads of state, government, ministries and international organizations.
