Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN in New York Mirgul Moldoisaeva met with UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner

On May 4, 2021, Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN in New York Mirgul Moldoisaeva met with UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner, and informed about the conflict that took place on the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border on April 28-30, 2021.

Mirgul Moldoisaeva informed that as a result of the conflict, 36 dead, most of them were civilians and children, 146 citizens were injured, more than 30 thousand people were evacuated from the conflict zone, and became internally displaced persons, houses were burned down, infrastructural and social facilities were destroyed.

In addition, she noted that today the Government of Kyrgyzstan faces the primary task of restoration of destroyed infrastructure, as well as returning citizens to their homes, who were forced to leave them temporarily. In this regard, she requested assistance in the process of restoration of the infrastructures in the Batken region.

UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner expressed condolences to the families of the victims. Achim Steiner also welcomed the agreement of the parties on a ceasefire and further solution of the issue exclusively on political and diplomatic maner. In addition, Achim Steiner assured that UNDP is a reliable partner of Kyrgyzstan in efforts aimed at developing the country and improving the lives of the people.

During the talks, the parties discussed issues of further cooperation in the process of restoration of the infrastructures in the Batken region. The UN Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator of UNDP Mirjana Spoljarich Egger also took part in the negotiations.
