Trade and Economic Cooperation

Trade and economic cooperation is the main catalyst for the development of Kyrgyz-Chinese relations. Cooperation in this direction is carried out in the framework of the signed intergovernmental Agreements on trade and economic cooperation in 1998 and the establishment of the Kyrgyz-Chinese intergovernmental Commission on trade and economic cooperation in 1994.

China is the main trade and investment partner of Kyrgyzstan. At the end of 2016 and 2017, China took the first place in trade and investment in the economy of Kyrgyzstan.

According to the National Statistic Committee of the Kyrgyz Republic, in 2016 the foreign trade between two countries turnover amounted to 1.563 billion US dollars. Export from Kyrgyzstan to China, in particular, amounted to 80 million US dollars, import - 1.483 billion US dollars. The volume of trade in 2017 amounted to 1.597 billion US dollars. Export was 97.5 million US dollars, import – 1.500 billion US dollars.

The flow of foreign direct investments from China to Kyrgyzstan in 2016 made up to 301,303 million US dollars, in 2017 – 303,025 million US dollars.

The main export items from the Kyrgyz Republic to China are food products and agricultural raw materials (honey, tobacco products, nuts, fresh and dried fruits, beverages, etc.), raw hides, tanned leather, ores and concentrates of precious metals, equipment and mechanical devices, vehicles and their parts, etc. Import from China to Kyrgyzstan – products of light and textile industry, mechanical engineering, chemical industry, inorganic chemistry, perfumery and cosmetic products, pharmaceuticals, land transport, ferrous, non-ferrous, base metals, glass, ceramics, cement, leather, wood, paper and cardboard.

The most important and promising areas of bilateral trade and economic cooperation is cooperation in the development of infrastructure and transport, energy, processing industry, agriculture, mining, tourism, as well as cross-border cooperation with Xinjiang.

Currently, the two sides are successfully implementing the number of joint projects in the Kyrgyz Republic, which have an important social and economic significance for the Kyrgyzstan.

The initiative of the President of China Xi Jinping on the creation of "One belt – one road" and the construction of the "Economic belt of the Silk road" also provides wide opportunities for cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and China. This initiative has a long-term multi-vector character and is aimed to expand the cooperation in the trade and economic spheres, in the field of infrastructure, including transport and energy, investment and financial sectors.
