On November 9, 2020, Bakyt Dzhusupov, Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to international organizations in Vienna, participated in a panel discussion dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Peaceful Uses Initiative.

The Peaceful Uses Initiative was launched in 2010 and aims to support technical cooperation projects and other unfunded IAEA projects in the peaceful applications of nuclear technology.

          In his speech, Permanent Representative Bakyt Dzhusupov noted that the IAEA Initiative has made it possible to accelerate progress in the implementation of the IAEA technical projects in the field of peaceful applications of nuclear technologies, including in Kyrgyzstan. With continued support from donor countries, the Agency is able to respond quickly to the needs of Member States.

As part of the Initiative, the IAEA supported Kyrgyzstan by implementing a project in the Central Asian region to strengthen coordination in the field of rehabilitation of former uranium mining sites. Also, one of the projects implementing in Kyrgyzstan under the Initiative is aimed at building the country's capacity to fight cervical cancer by improving the diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer.

At the same time, a presentation was made by the Agency for Tailings Management under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic on the implementation of reclamation projects in the Kyrgyz Republic.
