On the promotion of mountain initiatives in Kyrgyzstan

On February 13, 2024, a meeting was held between the Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic to Germany Mr. Omurbek Tekebaev and the Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr. Mayboua Xayavong.

During the meeting, current issues of cooperation between the two countries were discussed, in particular in the context of ensuring sustainable development of mountain regions. The interlocutors emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation in the international arena to jointly promote the interests of mountainous landlocked countries, especially in the field of environmental safety, sustainable development and ensuring the security of mountain regions.

Mountains cover a significant portion of the land surface and are key sources of fresh water, biodiversity and resources. However, mountainous countries also face serious challenges such as climate change, land degradation and natural disasters, which threaten the lives and well-being of their people.

Kyrgyzstan, as a mountainous country, actively and consistently carries out activities and promotes initiatives for the sustainable development of mountain regions. At the initiative of Kyrgyzstan, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a number of resolutions addressing issues and challenges related to sustainable mountain development around the world. In 2002, the First Global Mountain Summit was held in Bishkek.

In 2027, the Second Global Mountain Summit “Bishkek+25” will be held in Kyrgyzstan. In this regard, Ambassador Mr.Omurbek Tekebaev invited the Laotian side to actively participate in the work of the upcoming summit. In addition, the Laotian side was invited to take part in the creation of the Global Mountain University in Bishkek.

The Embassy expresses confidence that the joint efforts of mountain countries will contribute to solving the challenges faced by mountain countries and will lead to a more sustainable and prosperous future for our peoples.
