On December 7, 2023, within the framework of the 174th session of the FAO Council, the Permanent Representative of Kyrgyzstan to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Taalai Bazarbaev made a speech on the issue of "Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions".

For reference: In November of this year. by the initiative of the Permanent Missions of Kyrgyzstan, Italy and a number of other mountainous countries, the issue of the “Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions” was included in the agenda of the 174th session of the FAO Council, which takes place at FAO headquarters in Rome from 4 to 8 December 2023.

In his speech, the Permanent Representative of Kyrgyzstan T. Bazarbaev informed about the leading role of Kyrgyzstan in promoting the mountain agenda at many international platforms, the development of the Kyrgyz side of the concept “Five Years of Development of Mountain Regions”, which became an integral part of the UN General Assembly resolution “Sustainable Mountain Development”, adopted in December 2022, co-sponsored by more than 110 UN member states.

The Permanent Representative of Kyrgyzstan especially noted that as part of his participation at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Dubai, the President of Kyrgyzstan S. Japarov placed special attention on mountain issues and called on the world community to support the efforts of mountainous countries aimed at solving climate and environmental problems of mountain ecosystems.

It should be noted that in their speeches, the delegations of Italy, Spain, the Philippines, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Kenya, Peru, Japan, Thailand, India, Romania, Portugal, Uzbekistan and Russia especially noted the role of Kyrgyzstan who initiated the “Five Years of Action for Development mountain regions" and called for support for the efforts of the Kyrgyz side.

Following consideration of this issue by the FAO Council, it was decided that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, together with other organizations of the UN system, will undertake responsibilities to promote the mountain agenda and implement the Global Action Plan for the Five Years.
