62nd session of Commission on the Status of Women statred its work

On 12 March 2018 the 62nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women on topic Challenges and Opportunities in Achieving Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Rural Women and Girls has started its work.

The session was opened by Chief of the Bureau of the 62nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women and Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations Ms. Geraldine Nason which underlined the importance of efforts concentration at protection of empowerment of rights and opportunities of rural women.

After the floor was given to the Secretary General of the UN Mr. Antonio Guterres who gave positive evaluation of the Commission’s activity in the field of facilitation of women’s current position in the world.

The President of ECOSOC Ms. Marie Chatardová mentioned the importance of achieving Goal 5 of sustainable development called Gender Equality, and the President of the 72nd session of the UN Assembly General Miroslav Lajčák stressed the importance of the Commission’s efforts as means of women’s rights implementation.

Executive Director of the UN-Women Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka stressed the importance of empowerment of rural women’s rights as crucial condition of the SDGs 2030 implementation.

During the first day of the 62nd session of the Commission the representatives of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, the International Fund for Agricultural Development and NGOs had welcome speeches. In addition, a short summary of the Report of Violence Against Women was made.
