Trade and Economic Cooperation

According to the information of the Ministry of Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic in 2016 the trade turnover with Japan made up 18.9 million USD, including export - 0.259 million USD and imports - 18.6 million USD.

According to the data in 2017, the turnover amounted to 34.736 million USD and compared with 2016 it increased by 84.1% (18.866 million USD). Export deliveries for 2017 is 0.286 million USD and imports - 34.450 million USD. At the same time, exports for 2017 compared to 2016 increased by 10%.

Turnover for the period from January to March 2018 amounted to 7,363 million USD and compared to the same period in 2017 increased by 147.3% (4.999 million USD).

Export deliveries for the indicated period of 2018 amounted to 0.045 million USD, and imports - 7.318 million USD. At the same time, exports increased 9-fold compared to the same period in 2017.

At present, work is under way to establish direct interaction between the business communities of both countries.

Japan's new initiative, "Partnership for the creation of a quality infrastructure: investing in the future of Asia", as well as the renewal of the line of preferential yen loans, opens up additional opportunities for cooperation in the framework of Official Development Assistance (ODA).

In October 2016, with join efforts in Bishkek  was arranged the First Kyrgyz-Japanese Forum on Quality Infrastructure, following which a number of Japanese companies showed interest in individual infrastructure projects.

The Second Forum was held on September 14, 2017 in Tokyo, in which the Kyrgyz delegation participated, headed by the Director of the State Agency for the Promotion of Investments and Export under the Ministry of Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic A.Orozbekov. The Third Forum is planned to be held in Bishkek in 2019.

The practice of regular joint economic activities is also continuing: symposiums, seminars, conferences, business games with the purpose of exchanging ideas and searching for potential partners. For these purposes, there are prospects for establishing direct air communication between the two countries.

In 2017, the company "Sawada Holdings" acquired a controlling stake in OJSC "KyrgyzKomertzBank". Also, Tokyo Rope MFG Co., Ltd, opened its subsidiary Tokyo Construction and Mining in Kyrgyzstan. the Japanese company IHI Agri-Tech Co. Started the commercial delivery of agricultural equipment to the Kyrgyz Republic from Japan. The issues of increasing the export of Kyrgyz honey to Japan are being studied.

The issue of concluding an Agreement on the promotion and protection of investments was one of the pressing issues identified by Minister E. Abdyldaev during a meeting with his counterpart during his visit to Japan in March 2017. The Kyrgyz side expressed its readiness to invite the authorized structures of Japan to consult with their Kyrgyz partners on the expansion of the juridical base of Kyrgyz-Japanese interstate cooperation. In July 2017 and March 2018, there were two rounds of negotiations on this agreement.

Grant agreements

In March 2017, exchange notes were signed for three grant projects: 1) “The Project for Supporting the Unified State Population Register to Establish the E-Government System”; 2) "The Project for Strengthening Integrated Risk Governance Capacities and Regional Cooperation in Central Asia", and 3)" The Project for Supporting Safe School Programme (March 7, 2017 in Bishkek). The total amount of projects is 11.9 million USD.

Also, two grant agreements were signed: 1) Project for Avalanche Protection on Bishkek-Osh Road with a budget of 4 billion 288 million JPY and "Project for Improvement of Workshops for Road Maintenance Equipment" - 441 million JPY (30 March 2017, Tokyo). The total amount of projects is about 46 million USD.
