Trade and economic cooperation

In recent years, the Kyrgyz-Turkmen interaction in the economic sphere has had a successful and progressive development. A qualitative trend in recent years has been the intensification of trade and economic cooperation, as evidenced by the figures of a significant increase in trade turnover between Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.

Trade turnover between the Kyrgyz Republic and Turkmenistan in 2021 exceeded the amount of 28 million USD, which is 2.8 times more than bilateral trade turnover in 2020. The main export items from Kyrgyzstan to Turkmenistan are electrical goods (light bulbs, diodes and semiconductors), chemical products (barium sulfate), agricultural products (beans, walnuts, honey, potatoes), food products (flour and confectionery products). Imports from Turkmenistan to Kyrgyzstan are represented by electricity, motor gasoline and aviation kerosene, construction materials (sanitary ware, polished glass, etc.), textiles, and agricultural products (tomatoes, carrots, etc.).

In the first half of 2022, the Kyrgyz-Turkmen cooperation in trade and economic sphere had a successful and progressive development. According to the National Statistics Committee of the Kyrgyz Republic (January-April) trade turnover between Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan was 37.4 million USD (in 2021 - 7.1 and in 2020 - 2.5 respectively).

In 2014, the Kyrgyz-Turkmen Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical, and Humanitarian Cooperation was established.

The first meeting of the Intergovernmental Kyrgyz-Turkmen Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Humanitarian Cooperation was held on March 14, 2015 in Ashgabat. During the talks, the parties identified the most promising sectors as fuel and energy, transport and communication, agriculture, and trade, including entrepreneurship. In addition, the meeting participants discussed the prospects of signing new intergovernmental agreements and treaties aimed at expanding the legal framework of cooperation. The sides exchanged views on such topics as mutual protection of investments, taxation, exchange of information on technical cooperation and taxes, partnership in the field of international cargo and passenger transportation, information technologies and communication.

The second meeting of the Intergovernmental Kyrgyz-Turkmen Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Humanitarian Cooperation was held on August 25, 2016 in Bishkek, during which the parties discussed cooperation in the economy and trade, health, education and science, agriculture, transport, culture and tourism. The Turkmen delegation included 25 businessmen, who met with a delegation of the business community of the Kyrgyz Republic and discussed cooperation issues.

The third meeting of the Intergovernmental Kyrgyz-Turkmen commission on trade-economic, scientific-technical and humanitarian cooperation was held on July 30, 2018 in Ashgabat. During the meeting, the parties discussed issues of cooperation in trade-economic, agricultural, scientific-educational and cultural-humanitarian fields. At the end of the third meeting of the Kyrgyz-Turkmen Intergovernmental Commission, a Protocol was signed providing for measures to intensify bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, industry, agriculture, transport, health, education, science, culture, tourism, youth policy, physical culture and sports.

On August 4, 2015 the first joint Kyrgyz-Turkmen business forum was held in Bishkek. The business forum was attended by more than 100 domestic entrepreneurs, as well as representatives of ministries and departments of the Kyrgyz Republic. The Turkmen delegation included representatives of 23 companies from the pharmaceutical, cotton spinning, oil processing, energy and other industries. In the framework of bilateral negotiations held during the forum, 12 protocols of intentions were signed.

On July 31, 2018, the first Kyrgyz-Turkmen Trade and Investment Session was held in Ashgabat. During the session, presentations and video clips on investment, agricultural and tourism potential of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as on the III World Nomadic Games were presented and shown by the Kyrgyz delegation.

The fourth meeting of the Kyrgyz-Turkmen intergovernmental commission on trade-economic, scientific-technical and humanitarian cooperation was held in Bishkek on September 16, 2019. The parties considered topical issues of trade and economic cooperation, increase in mutual trade turnover, cooperation in the fields of industry, transport, emergencies, agriculture, culture, education and science, cooperation in the fields of tourism, sports and youth policy. Attention was paid to the issues of interregional cooperation and the state of the bilateral contractual legal framework.

Kyrgyz-Turkmen business forum was held on September 16, 2019 in Bishkek, with the participation of a wide range of representatives of Kyrgyz and Turkmen business.

June 27, 2021, in the framework of the official visit of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S. Japarov to Turkmenistan, a Kyrgyz-Turkmen business forum was held, which was attended by the President of Kyrgyzstan, as well as the heads of government agencies, business representatives of the two countries. During his speech at the forum the Kyrgyz leader invited Turkmen businessmen to Kyrgyzstan and proposed to intensify mutually beneficial cooperation and open businesses in the Kyrgyz territory. The forum included an online meeting between members of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of both countries. As a result, export contracts were signed for the supply of sanitary and faience products, pipe products, confectionery products, shoes and others worth more than twenty-eight and a half million U.S. dollars.

On August 6, 2021 in the International sea port of the city of Turkmenbashy took place an exhibition of goods and services. Turkmenbashi held an exhibition of goods of national production of the Central Asian countries, which presented the exposition of goods of such Kyrgyz companies as: "OYL Association "Ayu Holding", SCR LLC "Elektroforfor", TNC "Dastan", LLC "Golden Stream", LLC "Textile Trans" and LLC "Bal Aary".

On December 2, 2021 the fifth meeting of the Kyrgyz-Turkmen inter-governmental commission on trade-economic, scientific-technical and humanitarian cooperation was held via videoconference. The parties considered issues of cooperation in trade and economic sphere, industry and energy, transport, agriculture, education and science, culture, tourism, youth policy and sports, health, interregional relations and development of the bilateral legal framework.
