On March 23 Head of the delegation - Director of the Water Resources Service under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic Almazbek Sokeev spoke at the General Debate of the UN 2023 Water Conference.

In his speech, Almazbek Sokeev indicated that the Kyrgyz Republic attaches great importance to water resources and their efficient use, the introduction of the principles of integrated water resources management to achieve social, economic, and environmental goals. It was highlighted that the country's leadership launched the process of updating legislation, including the Water Code, and in February 2023, the fundamental policy document in the field of water resources was adopted - the National Water Strategy of the Kyrgyz Republic until 2040.

The head of the delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic also informed that Kyrgyzstan is currently working on the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the irrigation and energy infrastructure. At the same time, noting the economic value of water, he stressed that the costs of accumulating, storing, managing, and delivering water should be appropriately reimbursed. It was noted that Kyrgyzstan, as an upstream country, proposes and promotes the creation of a mutually beneficial compensation mechanism for the integrated use of water and energy resources in Central Asia.
