The First International Conference "Association of cities and other settlements with uranium legacy sites" was held

On September 15-17, 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, with the support of the Program Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, jointly held the First International Conference "Association of cities and other settlements with uranium legacy sites". The event was attended by delegates from Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, France, as well as by representatives of the European Council, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the United Nations Development Program, Rosatom State Corporation.

During the Conference, the participants discussed the process of remediation of uranium legacy sites and the role of local authorities and local residents in this process, as well as the existing socio-economic and environmental problems of tailings and ongoing work to address these issues. Practical ways of organizing international cooperation between cities and other settlements with uranium legacy were also discussed. It was noted that the Association could become a mechanism for constant interaction on the issues of socio-economic and environmental development of cities before remediation, in the process, and in the post-remediation period. It is planned that in the future the Association will be able to expand the scope of its activities and include issues of sustainable and socio-economic development of settlements, both in the planning and implementation of the remediation of uranium legacy sites, and in the post-remediation period.

On September 17, 2022, a study visit of the Conference participants took place to the sites for the reclamation of uranium legacy objects in the village of Kadji Sai.
