The first political consultations were held between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka at the level of deputy ministers

On April 15, 2024, in Bishkek, the first political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka were held at the level of deputy ministers. The delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic was headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Avazbek Atakhanov, the Sri Lankan side was headed by the Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ms. Aruni Wijewardane.

During the consultations, the parties discussed the current state of bilateral relations in the political, trade, economic, investment, cultural and humanitarian spheres, the organization of visits at the highest and high levels. The parties also identified priorities for further bilateral interaction.

Regarding the state of cooperation in the political field, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic A. Atakhanov noted that the first contacts between Kyrgyzstan and Sri Lanka began during the Soviet period in the history of the Kyrgyz Republic. From 1985 to 1990, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USSR to Sri Lanka was the prominent Kyrgyz diplomat Kenesh Kulmatov.

In addition, the importance of intensifying the trade and economic sphere of cooperation and expansion of the legal framework was emphasized.

The Deputy Minister A. Atakhanov noted the great economic potential of the two countries, and in this regard, he proposed to upgrade the level of trade, economic and investment interaction in such areas as agriculture, textile industry and tourism.

During the consultations, an exchange of views on current international issues also took place and the importance of continuing interaction withing the framework of the UN, SCO and other international organizations was stressed.

As an outcome of the negotiations, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on bilateral consultations.
