International Day of UN Peacekeepers

On May 29, 2023, under the motto "Peace begins with me", the 75th anniversary of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, proclaimed in 2002 by a resolution of the UN General Assembly, is celebrated.

This day pays tribute to all who have served or continue to participate in UN peacekeeping operations, which is also a day of remembrance for those who gave their lives for the cause of peace. Over the history of the UN peacekeeping force, more than 4,000 Blue Helmets have given their lives for the cause of peace, including 135 last year.

Today, more than 87,000 military, police and civilian personnel are deployed in 12 UN peacekeeping operations and play a key role in helping missions carry out their mandated activities, including the protection of civilians.

To commemorate the Day of Peacekeepers, Secretary-General António Guterres holds a wreath-laying ceremony at the UN Headquarters in New York in memory of the peacekeepers who died in the line of duty under the UN flag. Along with this, a ceremony took place this year during which the peacekeepers who died in 2022 were posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjold Medal.

From May 1 to June 6, the foyer of the UN Headquarters in New York will host a photo exhibition that tells about the 75-year history of peacekeeping, which will also be available in a virtual format.

The Kyrgyz Republic, as a peace-loving state, has always been and remains committed to UN peacekeeping as an important tool for maintaining international peace, security and stability, and being the first Central Asian country to take part in a UN peacekeeping operation, in accordance with national legislation, sends its representatives to peacekeeping missions UN from active military and law enforcement personnel.

The peacekeepers from Kyrgyzstan are currently also contribute to peace and security in UN peacekeeping missions.

Over the entire period of its participation, Kyrgyzstan has sent about 200 individual military representatives to various UN peacekeeping missions, including Sierra Leone, Liberia, Kosovo, Sudan, East Timor, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Haiti and Chad.

Kyrgyzstan is ready to provide personnel for participation in peacekeeping operations conducted under the auspices of the UN and considers it necessary to continue efforts aimed at consolidating and expanding the presence of the Kyrgyz Republic in UN peacekeeping operations.
