Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic to the Republic of Austria participated in the Official commemorative ceremony on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp

The Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in Austria, together with activists of the Kyrgyz diaspora, took part in the Official commemorative ceremony on May 7, 2023, dedicated to the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp. Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic to Austria Tolendy Makeyev led the Kyrgyz delegation on the commemorative procession where thousands of people from the different parts of the world had participated.

During the official commemorative ceremony, the Embassy of Kyrgyzstan laid wreaths at the central monument of the concentration camp and a memorial plaque in honor of the Kyrgyz soldiers who fell on the territory of Austria during World War II.

The ceremony was attended by 10 000 people, including relatives of the concentration camp survivors, heads and staff of diplomatic missions in Austria, veterans and representatives of international and non-governmental organizations. 

Austria was represented by Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler, Federal Minister of Interior Affairs Gerhard Karner, Federal Minister for EU Affairs and Constitution Caroline Edtstadler and Governor of Upper Austria Thomas Stelzer, representatives of parliamentary parties.

For reference: The Mauthausen concentration camp was built in 1938 and was the largest concentration camp in Austria. More than 200 thousand people were interned here, about 90 thousand of them died. The concentration camp was liberated on May 5, 1945.
