Diplomatic relations between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan were established on January 14, 1993.
The Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Republic of Tajikistan was opened in 1997. Currently, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Republic of Tajikistan is Rustenbekov Zhanysh Sultankulovich. The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in the Kyrgyz Republic was opened in 2002. Currently, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Tajikistan in the Kyrgyz Republic is Olimzoda Sukhrob Khoja.
The basic documents of bilateral cooperation are the Treaty on Basic Interstate Relations (1996) and the Treaty on Good Neighborhood and Partnership Relations (2004).
In order to effectively address priority issues and develop bilateral cooperation, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan established the Interstate Coordination Council, the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan, the Kyrgyz-Tajik Intergovernmental Commission on the integrated consideration of bilateral issues and on the delimitation and demarcation of the state border.
Political cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is stable and is developing both on a bilateral and multilateral basis in the framework of international and regional organizations such as the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Islamic Cooperation Organization and the Organization for Economic Cooperation.
January 14, 2018, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan celebrated the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Bilateral relations between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in 2018 were characterized by intense political contacts.
February 1-2, 2018, by the invitation of the President of Tajikistan E.Rahmon, the official visit of the President of Kyrgyzstan S.Zheenbekov to Tajikistan took place. Following the visit, the sides signed 9 documents.
March 19, 2018, the 16th meeting of the Kyrgyz-Tajik Intergovernmental Commission for the integrated consideration of bilateral issues was held in Dushanbe. Following the meeting, the Protocol was signed out of 17 points, which included intentions to enhance trade and economic, water and energy, transport and cultural and humanitarian relations.
May 3 - 6, 2018, within the framework of participation at the high-level international conference “Combating terrorism and countering violent extremism”, an official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan E. Abdyldaev to the Republic of Tajikistan took place.
May 31 - June 1, 2018, in Dushanbe, a regular meeting of the Council of Heads of the Government of the Commonwealth of Independent States was held, in which Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan M. Abylgaziyev took part.
An international high-level conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” was held on June 19-21, 2018 in Dushanbe, in which a delegation of Kyrgyzstan led by Vice Prime Minister Z. Razakov took part.
On September 27, 2018, a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States was held in Dushanbe, in which President of Kyrgyzstan S. Jeenbekov took part.
On October 11-12, 2018, a meeting of the Council of the Heads of the Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was held in Dushanbe, in which the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan M. Abylgaziyev took part.
During the meetings and talks that took place, topical issues were discussed in all areas of bilateral cooperation. Special attention was paid to the delimitation and demarcation of the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border, as well as cooperation within international and regional organizations. Understanding has been reached on practically all the issues on the agenda of the Kyrgyz-Tajik cooperation.
