Political collaboration

Diplomatic relations between the Kyrgyz Republic (KR) and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) were established in 1992. In September 1997, the Embassy of KR was opened in London. Ambassador of KR in UK E.Baisalov was appointed on July 31, 2019.

The UK Embassy in KR opened in 2011. UK Ambassador in KR since June 2019 is Charles Edmund Garrett OBE.

Political cooperation.

The Kyrgyz-British cooperation has considerable potential in the political sphere, especially with regard to the development of inter-parliamentary cooperation.

Chronology of visits:

May 16-19, 2012 - visit of the first Vice Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic J.Otorbaev to London as part of the annual meeting of the EBRD Board of Governors.

July 26-28, 2012 - visit of the Kyrgyz Prime Minister O. Babanov to London within the framework of participation of the official delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Olympic Games in London.

June 13, 2013 - visit of the First Deputy of the UK Foreign Minister Baroness S. Warsi to the Kyrgyz Republic in the framework of the official opening of the British Embassy in Bishkek.

August 31-September 6, 2013 - visit of delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic’s Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) headed by the Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs K.Imanaliev to the UK with the support of USAID / DFID.

September 22-26, 2014 - visit of members of the British Parliament (House of Commons) J. Mann and E. Rozindel (parliamentary friendship group UK-KR) to the Kyrgyz Republic.

October 9-10, 2014 - visit of the British Minister of Justice, Lord E. Fox to the Kyrgyz Republic.

October 27-29, 2015 - visit of Director of Department for Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the FCO Mr. S. Swinford to the Kyrgyz Republic.

February 17-20, 2016 - visit of State Minister for International Development (DFID) of the UK D.Swain to the Kyrgyz Republic.

March 17-22, 2016 - visit of an independent member of the House of Lords Baroness V. Stern and Professor of London University E. Kohl, an international expert on criminal justices.

March 21-25 and April 8-14, 2016 - visits of delegations of members of the Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) of the KR to the UK in the framework of training program organized by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD). The delegation of the Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) of the KR included Deputy Toraga (Chairman) of the Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) of the KR, head of the Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) of the KR group of friendship between the KR and the UK, as well as members of this friendship group.

July 19-23, 2016 - visit of the delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic headed by the Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, Defence and Security of the Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) of the Kyrgyz Republic A. Baatyrbekov, Minister for Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic K.Boronov together with representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the KR and the Ministry of Economy of the KR to London to attend the Assembly of Member States and donors of the EBRD’s Foundation.

August 18-19, 2016, Director of Department for Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the UK FCO Michael Tatham visited the Kyrgyz Republic.

In September 2016, at the level of Foreign Ministries of the two countries, the meeting of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic E. Abdyldaev and Secretary of State for the UK FCO B.Johnson took place on the margins of the informal meeting of the OSCE Ministers in Potsdam.

On March 6-13, 2017, the first round of the UK Government's Governmental Program to Assist the Government’s Office of the Kyrgyz Republic was held in London, in which a Kyrgyz delegation headed by the Head of the Government Staff A. Osmonaliev, experts of the departments of the Government Office and the Ministry of Economy of the KR visited London.

On March 19-26, 2017, within the framework of the 2nd round of the UK Government’s Program to assist the Government’s Office of the Kyrgyz Republic, a delegation headed by M. Mukambetov, First Deputy Head of the Government Staff, heads and specialists of various departments of the Government Staff visited the UK.

February 5-9, 2018 in London, the delegation led by the First Deputy Head of the Government Office of the Kyrgyz Republic M. Mukambetov, within the framework of the UK Department for International Development (DFID) Program on strengthening potential of the Kyrgyz Government learned about structure and activities of the British Government, Parliament, system of public service in the UK, in general.

March 4 - 9, 2018, visit of members of the Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) of the KR to the UK in the framework of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) program in order to get acquainted with the activities of the British Parliament and local municipalities.

From July 22 to July 27, 2018 in London Minister of Labour and Social Development of the Kyrgyz Republic T. Isakunova took part in the 1st Global Summit on Disability.

From July 26 to August 1, 2018, as part of the Penal Reform International Regional Penal Reform Project in Central Asia “Supporting the efforts of the state and civil society in combating torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in Kyrgyzstan” a delegation from Kyrgyzstan consisting of Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the KR, Major-General K. Asanov, a member of the Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) of the KR, a member of the Committee on Economic and Fiscal Policy of the Jogorku Kenesh of KR E. Surabaldieva, as well as representatives of Ministry of Internal Affairs of the KR and NGOs visited London.
